Saúl Ñíguez has signed a new deal at Atletico Madrid keeping him at the club until 2021. The 21-year-old has had a hectic week considering he was called up to Spain's provisional 26-man squad for Euro 2016 just yesterday. The deal adds a further 12 months to his previous contract but there could be ramifications for any team thinking about activating his release clause.

Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur have been reportedly interested in the players development but by signing this contract, it seems, Atletico will hold on to one of their best players this season for the next year or two at least.

Saúl became a mainstay in Diego Simeone's midfield following an unfortunate injury to Tiago earlier in the season. He featured in 47 games scoring nine goals - with some very important ones along the way - and offered Atletico an energy in the middle that they had, perhaps, been missing.

Saúl's release clause is reported to be around €45 million but a good European championship and that figure could be seen as a splash in the pond for such a mercurial talent. He really is that good and we have written about it on this site in the past.
