Atletico Madrid await tests on José Giménez' hamstring

The Uruguayan defender pulled up late in Saturday's loss to Sporting and could be a doubt to face Barcelona in the Champions League quarter-final

Atletico Madrid were dealt a major blow today when news that Jose Gimenez had injured his hamstring during their 2-1 loss against Sporting Gijón at El Molinón began to spread. The defender injured himself when running for a ball with Antonio Sanabria in the 88th minute.

Los Rojiblancos' rock solid defense has been worn down to the root when Gimenez' injury is coupled with news of Diego Godin's muscle injury that is set to rule him out for three weeks. Juanfran and Filipe Luis remain the only two confirmed starters who have not been injured in recent weeks and Diego Simeone will be forced to use Stefan Savic and Lucas Hernandez as his makeshift central pair if tests on Gimenez' hamstring are not good.

Atletico could have handed Barcelona La Liga crown with a loss in the north of Spain on Saturday afternoon and having drawn the most in-form team in the world in Barcelona during Friday's Champions League, are faced with a make-or-break couple of weeks in terms of how their season pans out.

While Atletico had been relatively lucky on the injury front for large parts of their campaign, their luck seems to have run out and the main aim in the league is to keep Real Madrid at bay and finish in second place behind an excellent Barcelona side.
