Alessio Cerci set to join Bologna...again

Only a medical stands in Cerci’s way of moving back to Italy

Reports in the Italian media indicate that Atlético Madrid winger Alessio Cerci is very close to a move back to Italy. He is set next month to join Bologna on loan, potentially with an option to buy.

You may recall Bologna were close to sealing Cerci’s arrival in August before the 29-year-old failed a medical. A knee injury he had at the time would eventually keep him out until Dec. 20, when he played 30 minutes in Atlético’s 4-1 cup win over Guijuelo.

This move, assuming it is at last consummated next month, does not come as a surprise. Cerci’s move to Spain in 2014 was a disaster, as he made just six league appearances in three months and scored one goal in the Champions League before Milan took him on loan. The Italian had not made it a secret that he wanted to go back to Italy, and Diego Simeone was in reality going to use him only sparingly (if that) over the rest of this season.

Expect Cerci’s move to Bologna to become official in the coming days.
