Atlético Madrid center back José Giménez left training early on Tuesday with what the club has dubbed an injury to the fifth metatarsal in his left foot. The Uruguayan’s status is pending evolution - Atlético will see how his recovery progresses before ruling him out - but it is very likely the 21-year-old will be unavailable Saturday, when Atleti host Las Palmas.
Giménez joins Filipe Luís in being out of action, as well as Jan Oblak (out 3-4 months after dislocating his shoulder) and Tiago, who departed injured in the first half of Monday’s loss to Villarreal.
When it rains, it pours. Atlético’s squad fitness, once the envy of Europe, has started to fade, and many are sounding the “crisis” klaxon as the team’s poor form continues to manifest itself in comprehensive, multi-goal defeats. Joséma himself did not play against Villarreal but had looked good of late, and his injury leaves Diego Simeone with two healthy center backs (Lucas Hernández will play left back until Filipe returns).
