Monday will see the draw for the last 16 of this year’s Champions League. Eight group winners - Atletico Madrid included - will find out which team is up next in its quest for progression in Europe’s top club competition. Atletico, winners of Group D, can face any of five teams: Bayer Leverkusen, Benfica, Manchester City, Paris-Saint Germain or Porto.
Atleti have history with each of these teams or key personnel within them. Los colchoneros played out two 1-1 draws with Leverkusen in the 2010-11 Europa League and drew 1-1 on aggregate before winning on penalty kicks in this round two seasons ago. Benfica were Group C runners-up in the 2015-16 group stage, beating Atleti 2-1 at the Vicente Calderon before losing by the same scoreline in Lisbon on the final matchday. Former rojiblancos Raul Jimenez and Toto Salvio play for Benfica, and Jan Oblak joined from that club in 2014.
Atletico have never played Manchester City in Europe, but City of course have former Atleti forward Sergio Aguero, and Diego Simeone matched wits with Pep Guardiola in the Champions League semifinals earlier this year. Simeone also has a favorable history with PSG counterpart Unai Emery and current Atleti forward Kevin Gameiro played for the French giants between 2011 and 2013. Finally, Atleti have Diogo Jota and Oliver Torres on loan at Porto and have played the Portuguese side on three occasions in Europe: the 2008-09 Round of 16 (eliminated on away goals), the 2009-10 group stage (lost 5-0 on aggregate) and the 2013-14 group stage (won 2-0 and 2-1).
