Many have blamed Atletico’s recent woes on the absence of Augusto Fernandez. The general has been replaced by Koke but it has to be admitted that Atletico lack a balance without their defensive midfielder.

According to the guys over at AS English on Wednesday, Augusto has undergone what is called an “Autologous Chondrocyte Implantation” on his knee.

It is considered a new technique where damaged cartilage is taken from the new cells and grown in a laboratory for a number of weeks before being re-attached to the knee..

As stated by AS, “the reformed chondrocytes are then grafted back on to the knee joint in a second, open-knee operation.”

Fernandez still have a ways to go in his rehab but this will supposedly help in the healing process. He can’t put pressure on the newly-repaired knee for a number of weeks.
