Atletico Madrid will confirm shortly another renewal to one of its core players, if club president Enrique Cerezo and the player in question are to be believed.

Gabriel Fernandez Arenas - Gabi - revealed that a new contract is nigh during a special episode of Cadena SER’s El Larguero that also featured Cerezo.

“We have an agreement, it has always been very easy when we’ve spoken,” the 33-year-old said.

The captain and club president were on the show concurrently, and it was recorded inside the Vicente Calderon, which celebrated its 50th anniversary on Sunday. Cerezo, too, indicated that an agreement had been reached for Gabi to extend his link to the club he joined as a child.

Atletico also celebrated another win Sunday, beating Valencia 2-0 to continue its unbeaten start to the season and go joint-top of LaLiga. Gabi has been in good form to start this season, helping to lead the side forward after another devastating Champions League final loss in May.

Since Atleti repurchased Gabi from Zaragoza in 2011, el capitan has lifted five trophies and become Diego Simeone’s trusted field general. He’s made 235 league appearances in red and white and scored seven goals. The renewal agreement comes in the nick of time for both player and club - Gabi’s pact is set to expire this summer, and any deal is likely to take him to his 35th birthday.
