According to reports in Marca, Juanfran Torres has signed a new contract with Atletico Madrid. Although there is no official announcement from the club yet, it is expected soon. The new deal does not include an extension and will still end in June of 2018. The deal is simply a recognition of Juanfran's years in the team and offers him well-deserved compensation for his service along with an improved release clause in line with how important he is to the side.

El Rayo will be 33 years old at the end of his new contract although the right back has expressed on several occasions his intention to finish his career wearing the rojiblanco jersey. Juanfran arrived at the Vicente Calderon four seasons ago and has been an influential figure in the Mattress Makers' squad on his rise to becoming one of the best right backs in the world. To further endear himself to the fans and his teammates, he has never been shy in expressing his loyalty to Atletico and turned down offers that might have meant an upgrade in his wages.

Arsenal, at one point, tried to convince Atletico to sell Juanfran but the London club were met with his refusal. Juanfran preferred to stay and make history with Atletico under Diego Simeone.

Next in line?

The next players who could be in line for an extension are Tiago Mendes and Fernando Torres. Both players' contracts end in June 2016 and it is believed that Atletico will show a keen interest in keeping the players at the Calderon.

In addition, the Marca´s journalist, Alberto R. Barbero indicates that management will continue to offer renewals to young players such as Oblak or Gimenez. The intention of the directors is to increase the wage structure in order to keep their most promising young players in the Atletico Madrid colours for many years to come.
