At the UEFA Champions League Draw Live from Nyon in Switzerland, Atletico Madrid were in the first group following their heroics in Lisbon on the last day of the group stages. Atletico Madrid finished on top of their group by beating Benfica in the last group game in Portugual. The score on the night was 2-1, which was a direct reverse of the scoreline in the Vicente Calderon earlier in the competition.
Having finished top of a group that also included trips to Kazakstan to face Astana and to Turkey to play Galatasaray, Atletico were hoping that finishing top would help them avoid Bayern Munich and Barcelona. It was one of Simeone's sides' main objectives at the beginning of the year and given their title race with Barcelona and their aspirations in the Copa del Rey, any help they can get with ease of their draw will be sought.
They avoided both PSG, Juventus, Arsenal and Roma, four of the more difficult ties in the draw but landed PSV as they finished second ahead of Manchester United and behind Wolfsburg in their group.
Atletico will play the first game at the Philips Stadion in the Netherlands and will play the return leg in the Calderon in the New Year.
The rest of the draw finished as follows:
Gent vs. Wolfsburg
Roma vs. Real Madrid
PSG vs. Chelsea
Arsenal vs. Barcelona
Juventus vs. Bayern Munich
Benfica vs. Zenit
Dynamo Kyiv vs. Manchester City
